Programme Overview

 

This programme has been designed to provide the international learner with a range of practical skills that complement the theoretical knowledge studies, which allow the student a smooth transition into the workplace. The syllabus aims to provide students with the knowledge and language skills necessary to operate effectively and gain employment within the travel and tourism industry. Strong emphasis is placed on the acquisition of interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with customers and colleagues through the English language.

 

 

Programme Aims & Objectives

 

On successful completion of this programme students have acquired the skills to:

 

  • Evaluate the tourism products in Ireland and the significance of these to the success of the Irish tourism industry
  • Describe the history of the development of the tourism industry in Ireland and its contribution to the Irish economy
  • Demonstrate an understanding of tourism policy in Ireland and future initiatives to ensure the sustainability of this important sector
  • Explain and interpret the critical developments of Irish heritage in relation to the tourism industry
  • Identify the vocabulary of Irish tourism which is essential for describing heritage and cultural tourism products
  • Use a range of business communications skills to survive and thrive in the tourism industry
  • Use English as a second language to communicate with clients and function in an international industry
  • Utilise business research and IT software to carry out minor research in tourism and event planning
  • Use an optional third language (Spanish or Chinese) for everyday interactions.

 

 

Assessment

 

Assessment for the programme will take the form of traditional end of semester closed book examination and continuous assessment. The weighting of this assessment will vary module to module, depending upon the nature of the subject material and the teaching and learning objectives. Continuous assessment will be deployed throughout the programme and may include debate, problem solving exercises, practical projects, case studies, research based projects, presentations, academic essays and a final project.

Entry Requirements

 

Students must have successfully completed a minimum of two semesters of Undergraduate study in business in their home college or university. They must also have an upper intermediate standard of English.
